The survival of the music sector goes through the platforms where users can listen to the songs they want on demand, such as Spotify, Tidal or Apple Music. For these platforms, it is very important to publicize their number of users, as an indication of the health they enjoy.
Last September, Spotify announced that it had reached 40 million paying users. Now, the Swedish company has just spread that number has grown, even more, reaching the 50 million users who pay the subscription.
The increase of 25 percent in just five months is certainly spectacular, as the latest increase of 10 million subscribers took them twice as long. In addition, it falls within the forecasts they had made a few months ago, to grow to 50 million payment users by March 2017.
Its main competitor, Apple Music, is well below this number of subscribers, having indicated Eddy Cue in December that they have surpassed the 20 million. Of course, also Spotify takes more time in the market, which is an important advantage. However, it will be interesting to see how long it takes Apple to reach the leader of the music on demand.
